Iran's third international plastic and rubber exhibition, Iran Plast 2004, concluded on 17 December 2004. Held at Tehran International Fair Ground, the five-day event drew hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of visitors. Speaking at the event's opening ceremony, Iranian Petroleum Minister, Bijan Namdar Zanganeh stated that given Iran's huge gas reserves, the petrochemical industry and its related down stream industries had a significant role in developing the nation's economic development. Zanganeh said in the third five-year development plan, Iran gave a pivotal role to the polymer industries, adding in the wake of which around 2.7m tonnes of capacity in Assaluyeh and 1.5m tonnes of capacity in Petrochemical Special Economic Zone in Bandar Imam had been built. He said parts of these capacities would enter the market by next year including the polypropylene plant of the privately owned Navid-Zar Chimi.
Also speaking at the ceremony, Iranian Deputy Petroleum Minister and NPC President M. R. Nematzadeh said Iran's polymer capacity would reach over 6m tonnes by 2009. Nematzadeh said before the next year Iran Plast exhibition, several polymer facilities including the linear low-density polyethylene (lldPE) plant of Amir Kabir Petrochemical Co., the high-density polyethylene (hdPE) and polypropylene plants of Marun Petrochemical Co., the first PET plant of Shahid Tondguyan and the hdPE plant of Jam Petrochemical Co. with a combined capacity of 1.5m tonnes would be operational.

350 local and 220 foreign exhibitors from 21 countries exhibited their equipment, products and services in the areas of raw materials, machinery and equipment, semi-finished & finished products, engineering and technical services. The show was organized by NPC and Iran International Exhibitions Company (IIEC). The event's foreign sponsors included Italian Plastics and Rubber Processing Machinery and Moulds manufacturers (Assocomaplast), Korea Plastic Processing Machinery Industry Cooperative (KPPMIC), Turkish Plastics Industry Association (PAGEV) and Austrian Federal Economic Chamber, Gesell & Co. Messemarketing International, Interfairs Co. Ltd. of Korea, Fairs Communications Int'l Co. Ltd. of Taiwan.
