One of the most important objectives of the country's third development plan (2000-2004), is to reconstruct the national economy based on export-oriented foundations with the aim of exporting industrial products instead of raw materials.

M. H. Peyvandi, NPC's Director of Planning and the Chairman of IPF 2000 briefed the forum on NPC's positions regarding the potentials and prospects of petrochemical industry in Iran and the strategies that NPC pursues for the development of petrochemical industry at Pars Special Economic/Energy Zone (ParsEE).
He highlighted feedstock, manpower and market as potentially the most important for the growth of Iran's petrochemical industry. About ParsEE, which is planned to become the center of petrochemical industry in Iran, Peyvandi noted, "what makes South Pars interesting for petrochemicals is the relatively high content of C2 plus (over 8.5%) and considerable amount of gas condensates". He also elaborated on the petrochemical projects which are planned to be constructed at ParsEE indicating that as the activities continue "on the next gas development projects we will proceed with future schemes for the development of our petrochemical industry at ParsEE according to a timetable of at least ten years".
