In-depth provides updated details on the NPC's development projects. In this issue, the column concentrates on MTBE project which is currently under construction.
Methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) is a synthetic chemical oxygenate that is added to gasoline for cleaner burning to reduce air pollution.
It is an octane booster and replacement for lead in gasoline. This oxygenated compound has been increasingly used to improve combustion and reduce the levels of atmospheric carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and ozone. Being a major contributor to octane enhancement, it has potential environmental benefits.MTBE is also used as raw material for the production of methyl metha crylate (MMA).
NPC's MTBE project is being built at Bandar Imam Petrochemical Complex (BIPC), south west of Iran, in a 10-hectare area.
The project's licensor is UOP and its main contractor is Petrochemical Industries Design & Engineering Company (PIDEC) of Iran which is responsible for providing basic & detailed engineering, procurement, supervision and workshop engineering. The construction contract has also been awarded to an Iranian company, Petrochemical Industries Erection & Construction Company (ECC).
The 500,000-t/y project is due on stream in early 2001. The plant will consume butane and methanol as its feedstock, which will be supplied by BIPC and Kharg Methanol Plant respectively. About 40% of the project's output will be used by the country's downstream industries whereas the remaining percentage will be available for export.
The total investment for the project is $ 230 m of which 43% or equivalent to $ 100 m, is the local currency portion.
