NPC, Hansa Chemie AG of Germany and Chematur Engneering AB of Sweden invest jointly to build
an isocyanates plant in Bandar Imam Petrochemical Special Economic Zone (Petzone), southwest of Iran.
NPC has a 40% stake in the project while Hansa Chemie and Chematur each have a 30% stake.
The project will be built in two phases in an area of 34 hectares. The first phase whose implementation
work started 7 months ago will produce 40,000 tonne/year of toluene di-idocyanate (TDI). Basic engineering
work for the first phase has been completed while detailed engineering is 40% complete. Land consolidation,
which is already in progress, will be completed in early third quarter of 2002.
The second phase of the project will produce 40,000 tonne/year of methyl di-phenyl-di-isocyanate (MDI) in
nine different grades, 56,000 tonne/year of nitric acid and 30,000 tonne/year of aniline. Its process units
include PMI, PMA, TDA, DNT, TDA, CDC and NB. The contracts for the provision of technology for both first
and second phases were awarded to Chematur Engineering AB. The feedstock for the facility will be fully
supplied by other NPC plants, which are under construction in Petzone.
Karoon Petrochemical Company, a joint venture company of NPC and its partners in the project, is responsible
for implementing and operating the facility, which is due for startup in 2004. The German and Swedish partners
each have two members in Karoon's board of directors. NPC has three board members.
