PTA/PET 1 & 2 Projects
NPC has formulated two purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) projects. The projects, listed under phases 1 and 2 of the NPC's Strategic Development Program, will be built in a 31.4 hectare area at Petrochemical Special Economic Zone (Petzone) on the northern coast of the Persian Gulf where several other NPC projects are under construction. Shahid Tondguyan Petrochemical Company, an NPC subsidiary, will execute and operate the two projects.
The first PTA/PET project is designed to produce 350,000 ton/year of PTA and 412,000 ton/year of PET comprising of 352,000 ton/year of fiber grade PET and 60,000 ton/year of bottle grade PET.
The contract for the license and basic engineering of the PTA-1 project has been awarded to Italy's Tecnimont. Daelim of Korea and Sazeh of Iran will handle the project's detailed engineering and equipment supply.
The license and basic engineering contract for the PET-1 project was given to Germany's Lurgi Zimmer, while the detailed engineering and equipment supply contract was accorded to Chagalesh of Iran and Lurgi Zimmer. The overall physical progress of the PTA/PET 1 project stands at over 49% as of mid October 2000.
Two thirds of the plant's output will be exported while the remaining one third will be consumed by the local downstream industries.
The neighboring PX plant at Bandar Imam Petrochemical Complex and the NPC's third aromatics project, which is under construction at the Petzone, will supply the paraxylene feedstock to the PTA-1 plant while Fan Avaran Petrochemical Complex will supply the required acetic acid. The remaining PX and acetic acid feedstock will be imported.
Output from the PTA-1 will supply PET-1. Ethylene glycol for the PET-1 will be provided by olefin no. 8 project and also through import. The project is expected to come onstream in late 2001.
The second PTA/PET project is designed to produce 350,000 ton/year of PTA and 396,000 ton/year of PET comprising of 132,000 ton/year of bottle grade PET, 132,000 ton/year of fiber grade PET and 132,000 ton/year of Partially-Oriented Yarn (POY)/staple fiber PET.
The contract for the PTA-2 project has been awarded to a Japanese consortium of Tomen, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. (MCC) and their Iranian partner Chagalesh. The contract covers license, basic and detailed engineering, equipment supply and technical assistance. The project is based on MCC's technology. Chagalesh will provide the detailed engineering and those pieces of equipment that are produced locally.
The contract for the PET-2 project was awarded to Noyvallesina of Italy and Namvaran of Iran.
The near-by NPC's third aromatics and third methanol plants will supply PX and acetic acid feedstock to the PTA-2 respectively. The PTA-2 output will supply PET-2 and the ethylene glycol for the PET-2 will be sourced by olefin no. 8 project.
