NPC, its subsidiaries and affiliates entered the year 2000 without any disruptions caused by the so-called millennium computer problem which had caused months of anxiety over an eventful rollover to the new millennium. The bug was anticipated to affect computer systems and computer-related chips worldwide in several critical sectors, including petrochemicals. To combat the Y2K bug, particularly in its 9 production complexes, which produce 12 million tons of petrochemicals annually, NPC assembled a special management task force and Y2K committees in its complexes and assigned them to oversee and counter any possible glitches that could arise in its complexes. The task force spent over a year fending off potential technological turnovers and ensuring the prevention of any production disruption or malfunction due to the millennium bug. The task force also made the necessary arrangements for overseeing the primary transition period (the end of December 99 to the beginning of January 2000). The arrangements included staffing, contacts, alternative communication links and tactical plans to monitor and respond to conditions during the transition period. Eventually, months of relentless efforts, planning and investment paid off in a smooth rollover to the year 2000. Tackling the much-touted Y2K problem through elaborate preparations was a great crisis management challenge. |
