On December 24, 1999, NPC and Institut Francais Du Petrole (IFP) of France concluded the license, basic engineering & technical assistance agreement for a Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) plant. The 50,000-t/y plant will be built in Kermanshah, west of Iran. The plant is designed to utilize kerosene as its feedstock, which will be supplied by Kermanshah & Abadan refineries.

The National Petrochemical Company (NPC) of Iran, Shell Chemicals Ltd, and Elenac GmbH, have agreed on 14.11.99 to undertake a joint study of the concept of an olefins complex planned at Bandar Imam Petrochemical Special Economic Zone in Khozestan Province, south-west of Iran.

The core of the complex will be an ethane feed world-scale ethylene plant. The scale of the plant and the nature and scale of the associated derivatives plants will be determined in the proposed study. In addition, NPC intends to study the development of a polypropylene project at Bandar Imam in parallel with this study. The study will be initiated immediately and is scheduled for completion by mid 2000.

On December 22, 1999, Salzgitter Analgenbau GmbH of Germany signed an agreement with NPC for constructing a 150,000-t/y acetic acid plant in Bandar Imam, southwest of Iran, on the northern coast of the Persian Gulf. The main feedstock of the plant is methanol, which will be provided by NPC's 3rd Methanol Plant at Bandar Imam.

Snamprogetti of Italy and Sazeh Engineering Company of Iran concluded a contract with NPC for constructing NPC's 3rd methanol plant, one of its development projects. The plant is targeted to produce 1,000,000-t/y of methanol. The plant will be located at Petrochemical Special Economic Zone, in Bandar Imam, southwest of Iran. Snamprogetti and Sazeh will provide licensing, basic & detailed engineering and financing the project. They will also supply and procure the needed equipment. The technology of the 3rd methanol plant is from Haldoy Topse of Denmark.

Noyvallesina of Italy and Namvaran of Iran signed a contract with NPC for the construction of a 352,000-t/y PET plant (bottle and fiber grade, POY and Staple) at Bandar Imam Petrochemical Special Economic Zone. NPC's first PET/PTA plant, with 410,000-t/y capacity, is under construction with the collaboration of Daelim of Korea and Sazeh of Iran in the PTA project and Lurgi-Zimmer of Germany and Chegalesh of Iran in PET project. Both 1st and 2nd PET/PTA projects are projected to come on stream in 2001.

Fajr Petrochemical Company, an NPC subsidiary, concluded a deal in October 1999 with an Irano-Dutch consortium for the construction of a water treatment plant. The consortium includes MSV of Iran and USF/Rose Mark of the Netherlands. Fajr Petrochemical Company will provide water, electricity, steam and other utilities for complexes at Bandar Imam Petrochemical Special Economic Zone.

In August 1999, Khorasan Petrochemical Company (KHPC), an NPC subsidiary, signed a contract with Eurotecnica Contractors & Engineers S.P.A. of Italy for the construction of a 20,000-t/y crystal melamine plant.

Kharg Island Methanol Plant, one of NPC's development projects, is scheduled to come on stream in early 2000. Consuming 70 million cubic feet gas as its feed, the plant will produce 2000 tons of methanol per day. The licensor and basic engineering contractor of the plant is Lurgi of Germany.Petrochemical Industries Design & Engineering Company ( PIDEC) and Erection & Construction Company (ECC) both from Iran are the main contractors for detailed engineering, procurement/supply and erection & construction. Petrochemical Commercial Company (PCC), the commercial subsidiary of NPC, and a Chinese company have concluded a deal for the annual sales of 200,000 tons of methanol produced at this plant.
