Khark Metanol Plant is constructed in the south side of Khark Island near the huge oil- export installations. Execution of this project by Petrochemical Industries Development Management Company was for using gas resources as raw material and convert them to the products with high added value and also perform part of its undertakings to the National Petrochemical Industries Company.
The goals of this project are as follows:
  • To prevent burning of exess gas.
  • To decrease polution of environment.
  • Transfer of technology and manpower training.
  • Employment provision in the region.
  • Move towards self- sufficience and to break off dependence.
  • To increase export of petrochemical products and obtain foreign income exchange.
Khark Metanol Plant with production technology and basic engineering of German Lorgi Company, is the first project of the phase 1 & 2 of strategic plan for petrochemical industries development with a capacity saleable of 660 thousand tons per year (2000 tons per day), and investment of 914 billion Rials (149.5 million Dollars foreign exchange, and 465.5 billion Iranian Rials). The plant is constructed in an area of 24 hectares using burning gas in Khark Island as raw material. Execution of the project approved by the parliament in 1997 and after obtaining foreign credits, the plant started production in February 1999 (anniversary of Islamic Revolution in Iran). Metanol is used as raw material for production of MTBE (added material to gasoline to replace lead tetra ethyl causing production of non- lead gasoline), aldohide, asetic acid, and also as a solvant in petrochemical industries.

Khark Metanol Plant is planned to produce 2000 tons of pure metanol "Grade AA" based on the process of synthetize gas conversion to metanol. Synthetize gas is derived from combination of natural gas and steam through the reforming process.
